1. PURPOSE
The purpose of these guidelines is to support the administration of the Postdoctoral Excellence Award.
2. SCOPE
- These guidelines apply to Postdoctoral Excellence Awards, which supports the creation, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge by rewarding excellence in research achievements.
- These guidelines apply to all KFUPM postdoctoral fellows.
3. DEFINITIONS AND ACRONYMS

ISI Journal | Journals maintained by the Institute for Scientific Information. The Master Journal List (http://mjl.clarivate.com) is a comprehensive list of journals that includes core collection and additional web of science indexes lists, only four indexes of which are included in Web of Science (WoS), which are the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Emerging Sources Citation Index. |
Project | A product of an approved research proposal that is scientifically reviewed by a competent body and has an allocated fund administered by DR. It generally seeks to systematically investigate a problem through scientific methodologies conforming to academic best practices to achieve the defined research objectives. |

4. OBJECTIVES
- The objective of the award is to recognise and celebrate excellence in research and innovation contributed by the postdoctoral fellows, and foster an environment with significant and impactful research
- This award aims to boost motivation, foster excellence, retain talents, and enhance the overall experience of postdoc fellows within our institution
5. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- All KFUPM postdoctoral fellows are eligible to apply for the award where he/she has at least 12 months of service with the University at the time of the application.
- Candidates may receive the award only once during their entire service at the University.
6. SELECTION CRITERIA FOR AWARD
The selection criteria for the award includes the following:
- Publications in ISI/Scopus-indexed Journals and Conferences:
- Points are for publications with majority of authors affiliated to KFUPM (more than 50%); however, in case of 50% or less from KFUPM and the Postdoc is a lead author (i.e. first/corresponding author) the points will be scaled by percentage of KFUPM authors.
- Research Productivity and Projects:
- Involvement in drafting research proposals for external/internal funding, managing projects as team member, dissemination of quality research work accepted/published in reputable journals towards the goals of the center, productivity in basics/applied research, etc.
- Innovation & Commercialization:
- Filed patents and innovation disclosure forms, participation in Proof-of-Concept grants, engagement in prototyping activities, any other related activities to innovation & potential of commercialization.
- Mentorship and Leadership:
- Supervising and training graduate and undergraduate students, e.g. in undergraduate research programs, delivering seminars, participation in lab development, services in professional society, e.g. TPC member in conferences, and any other research-related leadership roles.
- Teaching and Administrative Activities:
- Teaching courses, assist in organizing conferences/symposia, assisting committees
- Awards, Recognition and Distinctive Achievements:
- This for any awards received during the fellowship at KFUPM, e.g. recognition by professional society, receiving best paper award, publishing in a flagship conference, co-authorship of books, etc.
7. APPLICATION AND NOMINATIONS
- KFUPM postdoctoral fellows should apply for the award by completing and submitting the application form as per announced.
- Applications will be received by the Chair of the Research Committee via the Research Office in the Deanship of Research.
8. SELECTION
- There will be an appointed an ad-hoc committee, with experts from various research areas, to review and evaluate the received applications.
- The main task of the ad-hoc committee is to evaluate and assess the research output of each candidate as per the criteria. The committee shall critically review duplications of any research activity and eliminate credit claimed more than once for essentially the same activity. The committee may also review any previous applications of the candidate to remove any overlaps with previously accepted publications.
- The committee may request additional input from leading candidates. Candidates with the highest scores should be nominated for the award. If necessary, the chair of the ad hoc committee may be asked to defend the committee’s recommendations in a meeting with the Dean of Research.
- The Research Committee shall select two nominees for the awards as winner and runner-up.
- The Research Committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the VPRI for approval. After the approval of the VPRI, Deanship of Research will forward its recommendations to the Chair of the CHPE, no later than six weeks before Commencement Exercises.
- The Chair of the CHPE will inform the candidates selected for the award, under intimation to the Dean/Chair concerned.
9. CRITERIA FOR NUMERICAL RATINGS
- The numerical ratings for this award keep the relative importance of candidate research and innovation achievements criteria in view as shown in the appendix.
10. AWARD BENEFITS
- KFUPM shall allocate two awards annually.
- The award will provide SR 10,000 as a cash prize for winner, SR 5,000 for runner up and certificates.
11. IMPLEMENTATION, COMPLIANCE, AND REPORTING
- The Research Committee is responsible for monitoring the implementation of these guidelines, using the following performance indicators:
- the number of Postdoctoral Excellence Awards allocated annually;
- the number of issues reported in relation to the Postdoctoral Excellence Awards scheme.
- Deans and Chairs are responsible for ensuring compliance with these guidelines.
- Non-compliance with these guidelines shall be immediately reported to DR.
