1. PURPOSE
The purpose of these guidelines is to encourage the correct acknowledgement of multiple projects supported through internally and externally funded research grant programs.

- These guidelines apply to projects supported by internally and externally funded research grant programs. .
- These guidelines apply to all KFUPM faculty, researchers and students.
3. DEFINITIONS AND ACRONYMS
1. Definitions | |

Acknowledgement | Proper acknowledgment of KFUPM affiliation and internally and externally funded research grant support (along with the project number) in all publications and other outcomes. |
Project | A product of an approved research proposal that is scientifically reviewed by a competent body and has an allocated fund administered by DR. It generally seeks to systematically investigate a problem through scientific methodologies conforming to academic best practices to achieve the defined research objectives. |
Proposal | A detailed and structured request for funding prepared in accordance with the sponsor’s instructions and requirements. |
Research Ethics and Integrity Committee | A committee chaired by the Vice President of Research and Innovation, with the Dean of DR being ex-officio member, to ensure research compliance with ethical standards and professional standards essential for the responsible practice of research. |
Research Project Outcomes | Direct outcomes of the project after its inception that reflect clear acknowledgement of the project and its number. |

4. CASES REQUIRING MULTIPLE PROJECT ACKNOWLEDGMENT
4.1 Internal Grant with Additional External Funding
- The KFUPM team was funded internally under Grant #xxx.
- The KFUPM team received additional external funding under Grant #yyy.
- Example acknowledgement: The research team, leading author or PI at KFUPM received funding under Internally-Funded Research Grant Program #xxx and received external funds from the Grant #yyy sponsored by (name of agency).
This kind of multiple acknowledgement is acceptable.
4.2 Collaborative Funding
- The KFUPM team was funded internally under Grant #xxx.
- The collaborating team received funding from their institution under Grant #yyy.
- Example acknowledgement #1: The research team at KFUPM would like to acknowledge the support received from KFUPM under the KFUPM-KAUST Collaboration Program against Grant #xxx. The research team at KAUST acknowledge the support received from KAUST under the KFUPM-KAUST Collaboration Program against Grant #yyy.
- Example acknowledgement # 2: Author(s) at KFUPM would like to acknowledge the support received under University Funded Grant #xxx. The author(s) at KAUST acknowledge the support received under University Funded Grant #yyy.
This kind of multiple acknowledgement is acceptable.
4.3 Internal Grant with External Co-Authors
- The KFUPM team was funded internally under Grant #xxx.
- Co-authors were funded by their institutions under Grant #yyy.
- There was no collaboration agreement.
- Example acknowledgement: Author(s) at KFUPM would like to acknowledge the support received under University Funded Grant #xxx. The author(s) at (name of institution) acknowledge the support received from (name of agency) under Grant #yyy.
This kind of multiple acknowledgement is acceptable.
4.4 Internal Grant with External Support
- The KFUPM team was funded internally under Grant #xxx.
- Co-authors were funded by their institutions under Grant #yyy.
- There was no collaboration agreement.
- Example acknowledgement: Author(s) at KFUPM would like to acknowledge the support received under University Funded Grant #xxx. The author(s) at (name of institution) acknowledge the support received from (name of agency) under Grant #yyy.
This kind of multiple acknowledgement is acceptable.
4.5 Internal Grant with Undeclared External Grant
- The KFUPM PI or team was funded internally under Grant #xxx.
- The KFUPM PI or team received funding externally under Grant #yyy.
- There was no collaboration agreement.
- There was no declaration of the external Grant #yyy.
- Example acknowledgement: Author(s) at KFUPM would like to acknowledge the support received under University Funded Grant. The author(s) at KFUPM acknowledge the support received from (name of institution) under grant # YYY.
This kind of acknowledgement is NOT acceptable, and the case will be forwarded to Ethics and Integrity Committee.
4.6 Internal Grant
- The KFUPM team (1) was funded internally under Grant #xxx.
- The KFUPM team (2) was funded internally under Grant #yyy.
- Example acknowledgement #1: KFUPM faculty received funding under the Internally-Funded Research Grant Program #xxx and they work with an undergraduate student who is funded internally under another Grant #yyy.
- Example acknowledgement #2: KFUPM faculty members received funding under the Internally-Funded Research Grant Program #xxx and Grant #yyy. Both work collaboratively to accomplish the larger scope of work.
This kind of multiple acknowledgement is acceptable and the research committee will count one outcome per project.
The Research Committee will count one outcome per project.
4.7 External Grants not Administered by KFUPM
- The KFUPM team or PI participated in an externally funded project not administered by KFUPM.
- Example acknowledgement: KFUPM faculty received funding from the British Council, NSF, DOE … etc.
This kind of multiple acknowledgement is acceptable according to the funding agency agreement with the PI. The PI must declare external funding to KFUPM.
Jump to Top5. IMPLEMENTATION, COMPLIANCE, AND REPORTING
- DR shall implement these guidelines.
- Non-compliance with any provision in these guidelines shall be reported by DR to the Research Ethics and Integrity Committee.
6. COMPLIANCE AND PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
In monitoring and reviewing the implementation of these guidelines, the following compliance and performance indicator shall be used:
- number of unacceptable acknowledgements brought to the attention of the Research Ethics and Integrity Committee each year.
