To maximize the impact of KFUPM’s innovation ecosystem and its associated intellectual property portfolio, KFUPM has introduced a new structured and evidence-based evaluation framework for filing patent applications. The framework is intended to ensure that resources are allocated to inventions with the highest potential for commercialization, technology transfer, addressing national challenges, and delivering meaningful societal and economic impact.
STEPS TO APPLY FOR PATENTING:
Please email the following documents, as applicable, to tech-transfer@kfupm.edu.sa
- Invention Disclosure Form (IDF)
Complete the IDF and submit it as a Microsoft Word file. (Click here for the IDF) - Invention Disclosure
A detailed technical description of the invention, similar to a journal paper or thesis, including the relevant background, methodology/procedure, experiments, results, figures, and tables. Submit the disclosure as a Microsoft Word file. It should contain sufficient technical detail for a person skilled in the relevant field to understand and reproduce the invention. - Letter of Intent (LOI)
An LOI from a third-party industry or company partner (not from a startup) confirming its interest in evaluating, licensing, or commercializing the technology. The LOI serves as external validation of the invention's potential. (Click here for the LOI template) - Commercialization Plan
A plan describing how technology is proposed to be commercialized. The plan may be provided by the interested company, or by the inventor if commercialization through an inventor-founded startup is proposed. (Click here for the plan template)
Important: The Letter of Intent (LOI) and Commercialization Plan are not required for the patent filing request only if an exception identified in the IDF applies.
Hard-copy submission:
After emailing the documents, print the completed IDF, obtain all required signatures, and submit the signed hard copy to Building 16, Room 146, Deanship of Research.
