Introduction to Research

This is a one-credit Pass/Fail course that introduces the student to the minimum exposure required in research. It does not count towards the degree program. It will include topics such as creative problem-solving skills, understanding references and citations, reviewing papers, identifying journals and the like. This course will serve as a prerequisite for some future research courses. Its level is Freshman and above, and is taught by researchers, postdocs, and adjunct faculty. Its final output by the student is a paper review. This is the minimum required research activity for students at KFUPM.

To remove the burden from the academic departments, the course can be a college-based targeting student between sophomore and junior years. The course can be taught by postdocs and PhD students. They will also learn from the experience.

The proposed course is to be conducted in a small class size with a maximum enrollment of 20 students per section, which guarantees that students learn the most out of the class. Students will create their own author identification and find research metrics for their professors…etc.

One (1) credit course, Pass/Fail Appears in Academic Transcript, Cannot be repeated

 Project and Outcomes:

Project topic is by mentor or student

Outcome is review paper

 Instructors:

Researchers, Postdocs, Adjunct Faculty (with Chairman Approval)

 Application:

Student can register in the course directly (no prerequisites)
