In this lab, porous materials such as Zeolites, MOFs, porous polymers, and porous carbons are tested for their gas uptake capacities. The surface area of such materials is measured by exposing the solid sample to nitrogen gas under the isothermal condition of liquid nitrogen (-196 ◦C). Additionally, the gas storage capabilities and the affinity of the porous materials towards other gases such as CO₂ and CH₄ can be measured at different temperatures using a water circulator chiller.
