Because of the development of concept of green chemistry and sustainable developments, use of environmental friendly alternatives is gaining attention in the field of engineering and science. In modern corrosion inhibition systems (MCISs) that involve the retardation of corrosion metallic corrosion inhibition through proper designing, materials selection and implementation of corrosion inhibitors, use of plant extracts is attracting enormous attention because of their natural and biological origin. Literature study reveals that a number of reports are published describing their anticorrosion effect for metals and alloys. Plant extracts contain complex phytochemicals that interact strongly with metallic surface through their electron rich sites. These phytochemicals are commonly coupled with widespread conjugation in the variety of multiple bonds and polar functional groups. Present review article aims to describe the collection of major recent reports published on “plant extracts” as corrosion inhibitors. This review also aims to describe the advantages and shortcomings of using extracts as metallic corrosion inhibitors.
