Offshore Wind Power Potential in Saudi Arabia's Red Sea Waters: A Comprehensive Study
06 Jan 2025 @ 08:00 AM
We are excited to share that groundbreaking research is currently being conducted to assess offshore wind power resources in the Red Sea waters of Saudi Arabia. Led by Dr. Shafiqur Rehman, Research Engineer II at IRC for Sustainable Energy Systems (IRC-SES), this comprehensive study evaluates wind power potential at 49 locations across a 43-year period (1979–2021).
Key findings from the study include:
- Wind Speeds: Ranging from 3.83 m/s to 6.39 m/s across various sites.
- Wind Power Density: The highest recorded at site L8, reaching 280.9 W/m², illustrating significant potential for renewable energy generation.
The study reveals a promising trend, with wind conditions improving as we move westward and northward across the Saudi Red Sea. These findings will inform future renewable energy projects, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
