Workshop - Nuclear Reactor Design and CFD for Nuclear Applications

Presenter: Prof. Emilio Baglietto

Organized by: IRC for Industrial Nuclear Energy
22 Jun 2025 @ 10:00 AM
Building 63 – 221

Abstract:

This two-week intensive workshop, led by Prof. Emilio Baglietto from MIT, offers participants a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using STAR-CCM+, with a focus on nuclear reactor design and analysis. The workshop covers the complete CFD workflow, including CAD geometry handling, meshing techniques, solver setup, and post-processing. Participants will explore key topics such as turbulence modeling and thermal-hydraulic simulations in realistic nuclear engineering problems. Emphasis is placed on practical skills through guided exercises involving the simulation of reactor components and systems. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with the tools and knowledge to develop high-fidelity CFD models and apply them to both existing and next-generation nuclear technologies.

Biography:

Prof. Emilio Baglietto is a leading nuclear engineering expert at MIT, specializing in CFD, thermal hydraulics, and high-fidelity simulations for reactor safety and design. With degrees from the University of Pisa and the University of Tokyo, he has advanced both current and next-generation nuclear technologies. He also led international simulation projects as Director of Nuclear Applications at CD-adapco.
