The conversion of Hassawi rice husk to silica nanoparticles which are suitable for permanent UV protective coating.

Current UV-protective textiles are made from a plastic (Teflon) coating that is not stable and easily removed after several washes. Rice husk is a waste material that is usually burned into ash generating substantial amount of CO2 emissions.

Collaboration between KFUPM Centers for Refining and Water. 97% UVA/UVB protection was achieved using rice husk silica with TiO2/ZnO2 on 100% cotton. The process is patented, tested for up to 20 washes, and ready to be launched as a startup. Textile product is expected to be cheaper than the Teflon-based alternatives.
