Many rural areas struggle with internet access because building wireless networks there is expensive. Researchers at KFUPM’s Interdisciplinary Research Center for Communication Systems and Sensing developed a novel broadcasting solution that utilizes lower frequencies that results in extended covered range.
Saudi Arabia is spearheading the global shift to repurpose the 470–694 MHz frequency band from terrestrial television broadcasting to mobile 5G and 6G services, aiming to extend online health and education access to small towns. This transition, involving the reuse of 112 MHz, leverages the band's favorable transmission range, mature technology. To ensure a smooth transition, researchers are conducting extensive modeling of mobile and TV broadcasting networks across Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries, addressing potential interference risks, developing mitigation techniques, and determining minimum coordination distances.
This research yields impacts far beyond national borders. By facilitating 5G and future 6G deployments within the sub-700 MHz UHF band, this initiative aligns with global efforts to optimize spectrum utilization, thereby promoting digital inclusion worldwide. This strategic move positions Saudi Arabia as a pivotal leader in international spectrum governance. Beyond enhancing connectivity for underserved communities, it reinforces the KSA's global prominence in telecommunications regulation and technological innovation.
