Researchers at KFUPM’s Nuclear Energy Center, in collaboration with International Institutes are developing Saudi Arabia’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) design based on Generation IV nuclear technologies. These SMR’s are a modern class of nuclear reactors that can generate up to 300MW electric power and offer unprecedented efficiency, safety, and sustainability while providing low-carbon, reliable power for energy-intensive applications such as desalination and remote industrial sites. Unlike conventional nuclear power plants, SMRs are compact, scalable, and adaptable, making them ideal for deployment in regions where large-scale plants are impractical and in remote areas with limited water resources, addressing the global need for sustainable energy solutions.
With Saudi Arabia’s goal to develop an internationally competitive nuclear modelling and simulation infrastructure by 2030, this project will play a vital role in enabling the safe operation and adoption of Generation IV fission reactors. The innovative SAMA (Saudi-Swiss Advanced Modular reactor Alliance) SMR design is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the Kingdom’s desalination sector, which currently contributes to nearly 60 million tons of CO₂ equivalent annually, which is about 10% of the country’s total emissions. By integrating SMRs into desalination and remote energy production, Saudi Arabia can lower its carbon footprint, enhance energy security, and establish itself as a key player in the global nuclear industry.
The successful development of this research would mark a significant milestone in nuclear energy leadership. This initiative will not only support Vision 2030’s sustainability goals but also enhance Saudi Arabia’s global competitiveness in the nuclear power market. By pioneering next-generation nuclear technologies, IRC for Nuclear Energy and its collaborators are laying the foundation for a cleaner, more energy-secure future while ensuring safe, efficient, and flexible nuclear energy solutions for Saudi Arabia and beyond.
Through our commitment to sustainable development, this project aligns with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
