Seminar on Treated Wastewater Reuse as a Critical Component of Water Security
Organized by: IRC-MWS
The Interdisciplinary Research Center for Membranes and Water Security (IRC-MWS) organized a seminar titled “Treated Wastewater Reuse as a Critical Component of Water Security”, presented by Dr. Basem Shomar. The talk highlighted the growing importance of treated wastewater (TWW) as a sustainable, climate-resilient, and locally available water resource, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Dr. Shomar outlined diverse applications of TWW beyond agriculture, including groundwater recharge, cooling, recreational uses, potable reuse, and nutrient recovery. Global case studies from the USA, Namibia, Singapore, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia showcased feasibility and long-term benefits. The seminar emphasized that technological innovation, governance, and stakeholder engagement are essential to advancing the circular water economy
