IRC-SES – NIDLP’s Renewable Energy Technology Incubator (RETI)

The IRC for Sustainable Energy Systems at KFUPM was recently awarded a fund from National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP) to establish a Renewable Energy Technical Incubator at KFUPM. The proposed initiative facilitates and expedites research, development, and innovation (RDI) projects in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and industry 4.0 (IR 4.0) applications in the energy sector.

Mission

Establishing a state-of-the-art incubator to inspire students, engineers, researchers, and local communities to realize the full potential of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and Industry 4.0 for relevant technology development in the kingdom.

Objective

Build a state-of-the-art Renewable Energy Incubator at KFUPM to facilitate the research, innovation and technology transfer, and implementation of proof-of-concept ideas in the renewable energy sectors that will serve for the accomplishment of the vision of 2030.

Programs

The Renewable Energy Incubator administers the following five programs to support research at different Technology Readiness Levels (TRL):

  1. Under-Graduate Students: https://ses.kfupm.edu.sa/RETI-Grant/
  2. Graduate Students
  3. 50 K Competition
  4. Proof of Concept: https://droc.kfupm.edu.sa/static-assets/files/kfupm-grants/RETI-POC%20Grant%20Information.pdf
  5. Business Start-Ups
Beneficiaries

Expected beneficiaries of the proposed renewable energy incubator are:

  • Undergraduate students (Senior Design and Undergraduate Research)
  • Graduate students (Thesis and RDI projects)
  • Faculty members and researchers (RDI projects)
  • Researchers from other KSA universities
  • Business start-up Enthusiasts.

Provide areas and labs with needed equipment and tools to facilitate the mission of the winning projects teams

Follow up and evaluate the progress of the started projects to facilitate any obstacles that may stop the execution of the project

Call for proposals for different TRL research projects for the undergraduates, graduates, faculties, and researchers

Communicate with the private sectors to support the projects’ outcomes with high market potential

Provide funds for the winning proposals

Provide needed support to the expected start-up projects
